An Apostolate of Christian Renewal

The Servants and Handmaids, SHJMJ is a 501(C)3 nonprofit, tax exempt, Private Association of the Christian Faithful in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, with our headquarters located in Santa Maria, California.  We were founded in 1973, with the blessing of Cardinal Archbishop Timothy Manning and Pope Paul VI.

Our association is listed in the Official Catholic Directory of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the Official Catholic Directory of the USCCB. We serve in conformity to the Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church and in union with Pope Francis. Our governing Directors and members of ministry are Virtus and Safe Environment Certified, have been finger-printed and all have Letters of Good Standing from their pastors who verify the same to our Local Ordinary.  Verification of credentials may be obtained from the Sr. Mary Elizabeth Gault, B. V. M., Chancellor, Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Those who participate in our apostolate come from all walks of life and all parts of the world. We are men and women, younger and older, lay and religious, who are seeking to deepen our relationship with God and fulfill the universal call to holiness commissioned by Vatican Council II.

Our charism is to make Jesus' prayer for unity at the Last Supper (John 17: 20-23) a living reality.  By following this example of Jesus, we also strive to become a living prayer of unity− a Saint.  Jesus' prayer for unity is supremely realized through the Paschal Mystery.

To live a common way of life united in the Blessed Trinity, as reflected by the Holy Family of Nazareth is our primary purpose.  Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the most perfect human model of Trinitarian love, knowledge and service to and for each other.  Thus, we strive to imitate their relationship and example.

The Eucharistic Liturgy, prayer, building up the Body of Christ and being of service to the parish and the whole family of God is our spiritual focus.

We are actively involved in ministries of evangelization, teaching adult catechesis, retreats and development of our West Coast School for Healing Prayer.  We unite the totality of our very beings and all of our apostolic works with each Mass celebrated throughout the world until the end of time.
